‘Iwa Birds Pin // Great Frigate Birds Pin
A charm for soaring spirits, endurance, and grace.
‘Iwa is the Hawaiian name for the Great Frigate bird. Hawai'i's largest bird is an unparalleled flier due to its seven-foot wingspan, forked tail and exceptionally light skeleton (only 5% of its total body weight). The 'Iwa is an aerodynamic wonder. Unlike most other seabirds, the 'Iwa lacks sufficient waterproofing on its feathers meaning that diving into the ocean for food is dangerous. Therefore, it often relies on knicking meals off of other birds such as red-footed boobies. This is how it got its name: 'Iwa is the hawaiian word for 'thief'. Regardless of thisbehavior, this iconic bird is an aerodynamic wonder and has been observed to be airborne for months at a time and able to circumnavigate the globe.
This pin depicts a pair of 'Iwa birds riding wind thermals high into the sky, gliding with ease and grace. ‘Ōlelo No‘eau, written by Mary Kawena Pukui’s, says “Kīkaha ka ‘iwa he lā makani”, which translates to “When the ‘iwa bird soars on high, it is going to be windy.”
