Phalaenopsis is a genus of around 45 species of orchid native to India, Southern China, and Southeast Asia. Commonly called Moth Orchids, they are popular houseplants which, with the proper care, produce beautiful, long-lasting flowers year after year. Phalaenopsis blossoms present in a wide array of colors and patterns.
In Hawai’i, these orchids are oftener given as gifts marking special occasions.
Though not always thought of as invasive, there’s concern around the naturalization of certain species of orchid in Hawaj’i and their impact on native ecosystems. Hawai’i is home to three endemic orchid species!
